"For each Seaplane Pilot, that adventure piece is a little bit different", Steve Guetter explains. Unlike traditional airports with their carefully prepared runways and navigation aids, seaplane pilots must evaluate each land site anew. Water levels change, obstacles shift, and weather conditions transform familiar lakes into fresh challenges.
"I take a seaplane out to a lake, and I might have landed on that lake six times before, but every day is going to be a little bit different adventure," says Guetter. This dynamic environment demands keen observation, quick thinking, and masterful aircraft control. |

This month's highlight episode celebrates aviationâs diverse impact through three entertaining and educational stories. First, Major Roger Levy, Commander of the New York City Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), reveals how this volunteer organization has served America since 1941 with the worldâs largest single-engine aircraft fleet. CAPâs missionsâemergency services, aerospace education, and cadet programs.
Next, we explore the engineering marvel of Michelin airplane tires, and Mike Ciochetti shares the inspiring origin of Heavenâs Landing, a fly-in community in Georgiaâs Blue Ridge Mountains, offering a unique blend of aviation, luxury, and nature. |

Savanna discovered her love for aviation in the hangar of the Tango Thirty One Aero Clube in McKinney, TX. She first wandered in as a high school student, unsure of what path to take. With the mentorship of Kevin Lacey, she not only earned her private pilotâs certificate but also gained valuable A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) experienceâall before graduating high school. |

Kids with Sight Challenges
May be Able to Fly Too!
By: Dr. Jesse O. Bolinger, CNP, PhD
Have you ever dreamed of soaring through the sky, piloting your own plane? Itâs a dream many have, but for someone like me, who has been legally blind my entire life, it seemed impossibleâuntil one day, a simple question changed everything.
Several years ago, I was serving an AmeriCorps VISTA term for the Decatur County Development Corporation in Southern Iowa, working on career education. Thatâs when I met Jeff Jorgensen, a local pilot and founder of Open Air Flight Club who walked into my office and asked me, âHave you ever thought about learning to fly?â I immediately said no, thinking it was out of the question for someone who is legally blind. But then he asked, âAre you sure?â That question has been on my mind ever since, and it has completely transformed my perception of whatâs possible.
Weâve all heard stories of the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, and Charles Lindbergh, pioneers who overcame enormous challenges to make their mark in aviation history. More recently, many of us have heard about Captain Chesley âSullyâ Sullenberger and the âMiracle on the Hudson,â where he safely landed a plane on the Hudson River after both engines failed. These pilots all faced challenges and left lessons to be learned, creating a future for aviation. But what if I told you that someone who is legally blind, or even totally blind, could also pilot an airplane? It might sound unbelievable, but thanks to advances in technology, the answer is yes!
