Iowa Lakes Community College’s Aviation Program recently celebrated a major achievement, completing its 300th FAA check ride since reorganizing in January 2020. Andrew Barbee of Dubuque, Iowa, completed the milestone check ride on May 27, successfully earning his Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certification.
“This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work of our students, the commitment of our instructors and the strong support from college leadership,” said Tim Busch, Director of Aviation & Chief Flight Instructor. “Every check ride represents a student reaching their next level in aviation, and hitting 300 shows the momentum and excellence of our program.”

I Didn’t Know a Thing About Airplanes
and Started an Aviation Business Anyway |

By Caryn Wolf
In 1996 I was a photo stylist. While location scouting for a hangar in which to shoot a video, I went to an FBO at the Oakland International Airport and got the royal treatment from the boss. We were given full access to the facility for our shoot and the results were fantastic. In the hangar there were Citation, Hawker, and Gulfstream business jets and even a vintage Stearman biplane… and I had no idea what I was looking at!
